00:00 - When trying to do a knee cut to pass the guard, we are often met with a strong knee shield by the guard player. As the top player, to get around the knee shield, we can post on their shoulder and their shin as we step over their knee shield leg putting ourselves in a butterfly half guard. Then, we switch sides and shuffle our feet as we leg drag their knee shield leg. If at any time the bottom player lets their knee drift away from their chest, we can enter the smash pass position. If they are doing the right thing, keeping their knee to their chest, then we will leg drag.

Oftentimes I see students perform a fine sequence of moves and upon completion stop moving. This is understandable if you’re very tired and need to compose yourself, however, in many cases once you create an opening - keep exploiting it to see how far you can take it. Very often an opponent will be discombobulated and confused at the end of a successful offensive cycle and open to subsequent attacks before he can physically and psychologically recover. This doesn’t mean attacking frantically - just keep moving positively towards the next goal. Big openings are difficult to create on a good opponent - if you have created one - use it!!

For us, it’s a great way to control an opponent’s movement but you have to go further and isolate an opponent’s limb so that submission becomes possible. The single best way to do this for upper body submission is to get his elbows out and away from his torso. Don’t be satisfied with the pin. Always go the extra distance and work his elbows out and away from his torso so that the process of isolating a limb can begin - once you can isolate and restrain a limb - you can attack it with confidence!

01:27 - The top player switches combat base to begin to stand up with the leg on the same side as the arm that is being extended. He points his fingers towards the head of his opponent to slip his arm out and open up the closed guard.
01:52 - The top player uses a leg drag followed by a cross knee cut to break the grip on his ankle. He then enters into cross hamstring and begins inside camping.
02:00 - From the inside camping position the bottom player is able to peel off the grip of his bottom leg and bring it to the far hip. He uses this to switch sides and enter DLR
02:13 - From DLR, the top player is trying to sheer his leg free. It fails, but his foot is well above the hip so when he pressures forward the DLR is weak and becomes HQ.
