00:00 - When trying to do a knee cut to pass the guard, we are often met with a strong knee shield by the guard player. As the top player, to get around the knee shield, we can post on their shoulder and their shin as we step over their knee shield leg putting ourselves in a butterfly half guard. Then, we switch sides and shuffle our feet as we leg drag their knee shield leg. If at any time the bottom player lets their knee drift away from their chest, we can enter the smash pass position. If they are doing the right thing, keeping their knee to their chest, then we will leg drag.

00:01 - When retaining guard against a passer outside camping with a hip and knee post, LIMI discusses some ideas on dealing with the frame on your near leg. He talks about wanting to go to the far side of the passer's grip to break the grip by pulling it towards you. This gives you inside position once you break their grip and allows you to then transition to an inside bicep tie frame on their arm. From here, you can recover your near leg (low leg) or you can look to recover your outside leg to enter x-guard or k-guard. Regardless of our guard retention strategy, we should be looking to go into offense after we retain our guard.

All Highlights

00:35 - Giancarlo is looking to free his foot from 3-4 mount. The defender is turning towards the trapped leg and Giancarlo takes a deep wrap around the neck before freeing his foot and transitioning into a seated katagatame. The defender turns away to alleviate pressure and Giancarlo use it to transition to the back.

01:18 - Giancarlo has a trap triangle from guard. As the defender stands to posture out of the triangle, Giancarlo takes a scoop grip on the leg to transition into K-Guard before quickly entering into back side 50-50. The defender frees their knee so Giancarlo controls the hips and wrestles up taking top position in turtle.
01:29 - Giancarlo is attacking from turtle against a defender who is in 4-point (quad pod.) He takes a thigh pry before using an inside trip to break the defender's near knee down to the mat. He inserts his near hook as the defender tries to roll over his far shoulder. Giancarlo follows looking to take the back. The defender denies the back take but accepts bottom position in 3-4 mount. Giancarlo ended up in that same position from 3-4 mount where he threatened a seated katagatame earlier in the round.
01:55 - From 3-4 mount, Giancarlo takes a head and arm grip. He locks an interesting figure 4 grip that he uses to finish the arm triangle or ruotolotine variation. 03:14 - From RDLR, Giancarlo uses a kiss of the dragon inversion to enter DLR.
03:36 - The top player is inside camping from a split squat against Giancarlo's knee shield. Giancarlo takes a 2 on 1 grip on the near arm so the defender counters with an over back grip. Giancarlo then takes an overback grip of his own to enter octopus guard. He threatens a back roll but it fails and the defender takes top position in the front headlock.
03:56 - Giancarlo is defending from the front headlock with his foot up on the side of the control arm. The attacker goes into a cradle but Giancarlo breaks the grip and sits back to guard to escape. Immediatly, Giancarlo threatens a leg drag so the defender steps his foot up to prevent the back take, allowing Giancarlo to enter into the legs with SLX. Beautiful example of defense to offense and going from the upper body to the lower body.
04:28 - Giancarlo is working his high step passing. He posts on the far shoulder and the far leg before using a front pummel to free his foot and pass the guard.
05:26 - Giancarlo is working to pass from chest to chest half guard and the defender sits up looking for octopus guard. Giancarlo steps over the head to flatten them out to defend against octopus guard.

07:52 - Giancarlo defends the body lock pass with an overhook and enters the clamp. He controls the passer's wrist before entering into a trap triangle.
08:11 - Giancarlo is working to finish the triangle from guard but the defender sits down and crosses his feet over the chest of Giancarlo to escape as he reaps to enter inside ashi with a scoop grip.
08:41 - Giancarlo is attacking from reverse x-guard. The defender tires to defend with a front step but Giancarlo gets ahold of the secondary leg as he switches to SLX to knock the defender down to his hips.
09:12 - The guard passer is working to loose pass but Giancarlo retains his guard right into a tripod sweep to off balance the guard passer to their hips.
09:32 - The passer is inside camping from a split squat against a knee shield. He drops his knee to the mat as he sprawls to smash the legs together. He then pummels in a butterfly hook before passing to the other side, using a reverse leg weave to keep the guard player's knees facing away as he settles into side control.
09:46 - The top player is in side control with chest to back connection and a figure 4 head and arm (gift wrap.) He throws in his top hook and uses a chair sit looking to take the back. Giancarlo prevents the top hook from coming in and turns to his knees to escape. The attacker then switches to a top lock from guard looking to attack an arm bar
